Jan and James have been leading groups to Africa since 2002. After years of people asking if they could come with them, they finally decided to share their love of Africa by periodically leading groups. Jan has been to 5 African countries on 16 trips and James has been to 4 countries on 10 trips. Jan is a recognized naturalist and internationally collected artist; James a renowned wildlife photographer. Traveling with Jan and James will give you access to their incredible experience and knowledge, both in preparing for the adventure, and during you trip. Come share Africa with them!

Itinerary:
 
  • Day 1 - September 24 – DEPART USA
     
  • Day 2 - September 25 – ARRIVE KILIMANJARO AIRPORT VIA AMSTERDAN
    You will be met by a Safari Legacy representative and transferred to Dik Dik Hotel where you will be greeted by Jan and James.
     
  • Day 3 – September 26 – TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK
    After breakfast and a quick orientation meeting we will depart for Tarangire National Park. If we are lucky we may get a glimpse of Mt. Kilimanjaro as we begin our journey. Tarangire is the third largest park in Tanzania which is famous for its many baobab trees. Tarangire also has one of the largest populations of elephants on the continent.
     
    We will have a box lunch as we work our way through the park on our first game drive, ending up on the other side at our camp in time to settle in and have dinner.

  • Day 4 – September 27 – TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK
    We will leave early morning with a box breakfast to begin exploring Tarangire. Animals we may encounter include fringe eared oryx, lesser kudu, zebra, giraffe, leopard, lion, impala, buffalo, zebra and over 260 bird species! We will return for lunch and a siesta, then go back out for an afternoon game drive.

  • Day 5 – September 28 – TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK/LAKE MANYARA
    After breakfast we will depart and travel to Lake Manyara National Park. Stretching along the base of the Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara is a scenic gem. This park has a wide variety of different habitats from deep forest to open grassland, lakeshore, and swamp. Here you may see the elusive and rarely photographed bushbuck, blue sykes monkey, and grey cheeked hornbills. You will also see pelicans, flamingos and many other bird species. We will arrive in time for lunch and then we will head out for our afternoon game drive.

  • Day 6 – September 29 – LAKE MANYARA/ MTO WA MBU VILLAGE/ NGORONGORO CRATER
    After breakfast and perhaps a quick game drive to the park, we will spend some time in the local village where we will be given a tour of unique sites including the village market, beer garden (where you can sample banana beer), Tinga Tinga artist studio, Makonde carvers studio, and then have an authentic African lunch under the banana trees, prepared by village woman on open fires. Afterwards we will begin our assent up the into the Ngorongoro highlands arriving at our lodge in time for dinner (approximately $20 additional cost per person for the cultural tour and lunch).

  • Day 7 - September 30 – NGORONGORO CRATER
    The crater is the Earth’s largest unbroken caldera. A veritable “Garden of Eden”, the crater is reputed to contain the highest density of carnivores. This will also be the best chance to see Black Rhino. We will spend the entire day in the crater with a picnic lunch, at sunset ascending the rim of the crater back to the lodge for dinner.

  • Day 8 – October 1 – SERENGETI
    After breakfast we will begin our descent from the crater rim and head to the most famous national park in the world – the Serengeti. On the way we will visit an authentic Maasai village (maybe a slight extra charge). We will have a box lunch on the road. The Serengeti is home to the greatest concentration of large mammals on Earth – including the world famous wildebeest migration. The Serengeti plain is dotted with huge “kopjes”, large rock outcroppings which are favorite viewing platforms for lions and leopards. You can also expect to see elephant, buffalo, cheetah, zebra, gazelle, giraffe, hippos, wildebeest and myriad birds! We will be staying in luxury mobile tented camps – a true “African” experience! We will have a game drive as we enter the Serengeti and proceed to our camp.

  • Day 9 - 11 – October 2-4 – SERENGETI
    We will leave early mornings with a box breakfast, exploring the Serengeti until lunch time where we will return to camp, have lunch, download cards, and relax, leaving out again for an afternoon game drive usually about 3:30 until dusk.

  • Day 12 – October 5 - SERENGETI/ARUSHA
    This morning after breakfast we will say goodbye to the Serengeti and head to the local airstrip where our bush plane will fly us to Arusha. We will be greeted by representatives from Safari Legacy and taken to the world famous Cultural Heritage Center, which has appeared in movies and been visited by many dignitaries. Here we will have a delicious lunch and have the opportunity to shop for artifacts, souvenirs, and wood carvings. You may also purchase Tanzanite and other rare gem jewelry. Tanzanite is known for its rich blue/purple color and is only mined from one single mine in the entire world, at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro. There is also a newly opened art gallery which carries James' and Jan’s work. You will then be provided with dayrooms, either at Cultural Heritage or a nearby hotel. After a light dinner you will be transferred to your hotel for your departing flight home.

  • Day 13 – October 6 – AMSTERDAM/USA

  3. All transfers if arriving and departing with group; separate, private transfers can be arranged by subject to additional costs
  4. All meals stated in the itinerary

  7. All park fees including all day in Crater

  14. Tour guides – Jan and James will be with you from beginning to end to make sure your trip is perfect! Jan will also teach you all about the natural history of the area, sharing her experiences and insights. James will help with photography and help you learn some words and phrases in Swahili

*Note: the price is based on double occupancy. If you are traveling alone we will endeavor to find you a tent mate, but if we can’t or you would rather be alone then add a single supplement of $755.
